How many crypto owners are in Indonesia?

It is estimated that 12 million people, 4.5% of Indonesia’s total population, currently own cryptocurrency.¹

State of crypto in Indonesia

Cryptocurrency trading as a commodity in Indonesia is legal and is officially regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Regulatory Agency (BAPPEBTI), a body under the Ministry of Trade.

Based on CoFTRA data, crypto investment transactions in Indonesia reached IDR 478.5 trillion as of July 2021, an increase of 5 times. Meanwhile, the average transaction value in the Indonesian crypto market can reach IDR 1.7 trillion per day.²

Indonesian Central Securities Depository (KSEI) data show that the total number of portfolio investors – indicated by the number of single investor identities (SIDs) – reached 7.35 million as of Dec 2021, marking an increase of 89.58 percent from 2020.³

As of 2021, it is estimated that 51% of the crypto users in Indonesia are male, and 49% are female.

According to our data, cryptocurrency ownership in Indonesia has increased from 2.7% in 2020 to 4.5% in 2021, representing an increase of about 5 million cryptocurrency users.

Majority of Indonesian cryptocurrency owners are in the 18-44 age group (78%). Only 4% of them are 45 and above. This suggests that cryptocurrencies are largely owned by Indonesian millennials.
